Remodeling a kitchen, bathroom, or bar can be a rewarding and exciting endeavor. Starting over from scratch can allow a home owner to customize and reflect individual taste. With a myriad of choices for materials to choose from, the home owner may feel overwhelmed. Should the kitchen cabinets have solid wood doors or glass panes? Is granite the best choice for a countertop or would limestone, soapstone, or onyx be better suited? What style of sink will finish off and complement the other components? An interior designer or decorator experienced in kitchen or bathroom remodels can often help to streamline and organize the possible confusion.
One feature of a kitchen remodel which is often overlooked is the kitchen sink. The majority of home owners looking to upgrade the cabinets and countertop in a kitchen remodel usually do not place as much emphasis on what style and quality of sink to install with a beautiful granite or other natural stone countertop. While double sinks are standard in homes today, triple sinks and large single sinks have been making a comeback.
Triple sinks and offset double sinks provide better flexibility to accommodate pots and pans and dishes while still leaving a smaller section available for hand washing and food preparation. Large single sinks have an even better capacity for handling larger pans, cookie sheets and cake pans. The depth of the sink can also vary as there is no one standard of depth. With a deeper a sink bottom, there is less of a chance to splash water or oil on the countertop. For better utility and to make the sink a balance point for custom-cut stone or granite countertops, the faucet and handles can be ornately prominent with a long neck to pivot over deep pots and pans. A brushed nickel or steel finish adds a nice touch of class as well.
Quality and gauge, or thickness of the steel, varies greatly from model to model of sink. One of the major considerations when selecting a sink is how heavy the gauge of steel used. The heavier gauge it is; the less chance of denting the sink from dropping a pot or pan. The most important benefit of a heavier weight of steel, however, is the sound insulation it provides when the garbage disposal is in use.
When looking at the whole picture it becomes easier to see how one individual item can detract from the entire remodel. While the home owner may have invested a sizable sum in natural stone, quartz, and granite countertops and island, cheap cabinets and sink, which are focal points, will be quite obvious even to the untrained eye.
