Most children get exposed to reading at a young age. If they are lucky, they will have parents, grandparents, sitters, or siblings who introduce them to picture books. Otherwise, they discover these treasures once they enter school. If you want to add to your kid's collection, here are ten favorite picture books your child will love.
1. Where the Wild Things Are
This has been a favorite with boys since it was first published in 1988. Max gets sent to his room as a punishment, and there his imagination takes over.
2. Harold and the Purple Crayon
Another boy in a story about unlimited imagination. In this case, Harold has a purple crayon and sets off on a journey. He uses his smarts to get himself out of trouble.
3. Tikki Tikki Tembo
This faux Chinese folk tale catches kids attention with a funny story of brotherly love. Children love the very long, rhyming name of the first, most honored son.
4. Chrysanthemum
Another long, difficult name. At least that's what Chrysanthemum thinks. She didn't think so before she started school. She thought her name was absolutely perfect. But everyone else giggled when they heard her name.
5. Curduroy
Corduroy is a bear who lives on a shelf in a department store, waiting for someone to take him home. When he is rejected because he is missing a button on his overall, he goes on an adventure to try to find it.
6. Stellaluna
One day Stellaluna fell from her branch in a tree into a nest of baby birds. But she was altogether different, hanging upside down instead of sitting upright. Mama Bird allowed her to stay, but only if she followed her rules. So Stellaluna behaved as a good bird should.
7. Dinosaur Stomp: A Monster Pop-Up
The dinosaurs are going to a party in the swamp. The gorgeously colorful and animated illustrations catch kids' eyes, and what kid doesn't like dinosaurs? The pop-ups in this book are huge and seem to explode out of the pages.
8. Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type
The cows in Farmer Brown's Barn have found a typewriter. All day he hears, click, clack, moo, then finds a letter. "Dear Farmer Brown, The barn is very cold at night. We'd like some electric blankets. Sincerely, The Cows."
9. Miss Nelson is Missing
Miss Nelson, a very nice teacher, has a terribly mean class. One day, when she doesn't show up, the kids are happy. Until they meet Miss Viola Swamp...
10. The Gunniwolf
A little girl goes into the woods to pick some flowers. While there, she meets the Gunniwolf, who orders her to sing a "guten, sweeten song." Kids love the repetitive, onomatopoeia words and sense of danger.
There you have ten picture books that your kids will love. At least, many other children over the years have loved them, so there is a good possibility yours will also.
