Have you ever used a rain barrel for your garden? Well, you should try using one at home, as it can definitely help you keep in some extra water for your house and gardening needs. What are RainBarrels?
Basically, rainbarrels are water saving devices that help save and store rain water that typically comes down from rooftops or downspouts. Rain Barrel Construction
These are very easy to make and assemble (along with other water conservation facts). And to even make these rain water harvesting methods possible, you should start constructing and preparing a 55-gallon container, a garden hose, some PVC couplings, a screen grate or Louvered screen (used for filtering objects that might get into contact with the water), a ¾" brass faucet, ¾" hose adapter, some Teflon tape, and Two-runs of garden hose. You'll also need a drill, and 6" hole saw bit, a 29/32 drill bit, and a 3/4 Pipe Tap.
Now to make your own, you're going to have to make sure that you get the container cleaned first (don't use chemicals to clean this up). After this, use the 6" hole saw to cut a hole on the barrel's top; and then drill another hole (using the 29/32 bit this time) towards the barrel's top for the overflow. Drill another one just above the base area (about 6" from the base) to make way for your faucet. After this, get your Pipe Tap to thread the 29/32 holes that were drilled previously; and then position the tap on the holes edge, giving it a back-and-forth twisting. The next thing that you'll need to do is to twist the hose adapter into the top hole (this would be for your overflow). When this is done, cover the faucet threads with some Teflon tape (about 5 rounds of this); and then screw this securely into the base hole. After that, place your screen grate on top of your barrel. And if you want to keep it off the ground, you can put blocks underneath the downspout. Fix your downspout in a fitting position so that rainwater may go directly into the barrel.
