Creating a trusting bond between you and your parrot can seem like a daunting task especially for new pet bird owners. It can also seem like a slow torturing process. It doesn't have to be daunting or a long process. But it does require patience, consistency and a desire on your part. Here are some tips to creating a lasting, trusting bond between you and your pet parrot.
- Daily maintenance - Simple daily maintenance such as feeding (preparing), watering and cleaning demonstrate that you can be trusted. Doing these things not only helps your parrot become dependent upon you but it learns to trust that you'll consistently provide any necessities that it requires.
- Fun Time - Harmless, nonthreatening, nondominating play time can demonstrate to your parrot that you don't intend to harm it. Any pleasurable moments that you share enhance the bond that you build with your parrot. A favorite thing for most parrots is a head massage or "scrinch". My parrot would sit there for hours getting a scrinched.
- Toys - Providing toys and other environmental enrichment can help build a bond between you and your parrot. Much like the core requirements (food, water and shelter), environmental enrichment is essential to your parrot. Toys are fun for your parrot and create a positive experience for your parrot. The more positive experiences you create, the better the bond between you and your parrot.
- Consistently Do No Harm - Never be disrespectful or threatening in any actions. One threatening instance (yellow, water bottle spraying, etc) can set you back. Any negative responses by you or actions by you will be interpreted as a threat to your parrot.
- Consistently Do Some Good - Always treat your parrot with respect and with positivity. There is a reason that all animal training now uses positive reinforcement (rewarding good behavior) and no longer uses negative reinforcement (punishing bad behaviors). The reason is that Positive Reinforcement works faster, works better and builds a better bond between the trainer and the animal.
- Remain Calm - Loud noises, fast sudden movements around your parrot, you (or others) running by the cage or other seemingly nonthreatening gestures by you or others can be interpreted by your bird as threats. Always remain calm around your parrot and pay close attention to gestures that may be interpreted as threatening.
- Training - Teaching your parrot tricks or behaviors can be a very rewarding experience for you and your parrot. It creates a mutually rewarding atmosphere where your parrot learns to please you and your parrot gets LOTS of treats! This assumes you use a positive reinforcement training program. Clicker training is one method of training that creates a positive environment full of positive reinforcements.
- Choice - Never force anything on your parrot. Providing options for your parrot demonstrates your willingness to give them some space and a choice. So instead of giving them one toy, give them a few different types of toys to select from. Instead of feeding them one vegetable, give them a few options.
- Talk it Out - Talking to your parrot any chance you get reinforces the fact that you are sharing it's space and not intending to harm it. Most predators of birds use stealth and surprise to attack. By talking to your parrot, you demonstrate that you have nothing to hide and you aren't attempting to sneak up on it. It's also important to maintain a soothing voice. You may look crazy talking to a bird but your bird will learn to like it and look forward to it. Plus, if your bird is a talker, you can use this opportunity to teach your bird to talk.
- Eliminate External Stresses - Keep your parrot in a safe and stress free environment. You can do this by placing the cage in a safe and appropriate place, maintaining a comfortable environment (temp, humidity, etc) and by keeping predators (dogs, cats, etc) away from it. Any stresses due to the surrounding environment will lead to stress between you and you parrot.
