Before bringing a new cockatiel into your home you would do well to do a little research. You will most likely find it necessary to make some changes in your home. The first decision is where to place it's cage. Just as important is what kind of cage to purchase.
Cage construction is extremely important. Cockatiels are very active birds. You must be sure that your choice of cage does not have any area that would allow the bird to stick it's head through and become stuck. Cage location is next. Be sure to chose a location that is out of drafts and direct sunlight. Make sure the cage has provision for adding food and water and also the addition for toys to keep the bird occupied.
Most owners allow their birds to roam free of their cages from time to time. Open windows and doors need to be avoided of course whenever your bird is free of it's cage. also make sure that any large windows do not appear as openings to the outside to keep your cockatiel from flying into the glass.
Open containers of liquids including a bathtub or open toilet could lead your bird into serious trouble and danger of drowning. Of course any open container containing cleaning compounds or other chemicals could spell disaster. You must always think about any potential hazards that an inquisitive bird may discover. Be cautious to keep insect sprays and other aerosol products out of the air around your bird.
Cockatiels like many other pets and some toddlers as well have a penchant for chewing on almost anything that attracts them. Be sure to do all you can to hide any electrical cord that could attract your cockatiel.
Because of the birds natural tendency to inspect various places in your home you need to be careful during times the bird is out of the cage. It would be easy in an unthinking moment to accidentally sit on your bird if you do not notice him in time.
After some consideration you may decide that caring for a cockatiel is just too much trouble. However as with any good pet there will be necessary chores you may not be used to doing. However if you bring the bird into your home and you have done your research and set up everything properly you could be rewarded with many years of companionship. You may find the squawking of a beautiful cockatiel just the thing to cheer up your household.
