One of my budgie died recently, at 9 years old. She was sickly for a while, so I guess it shouldn't have been too much of a surprise.
The other budgie in the cage is 7 years old. There is no one in the house for most the day, so she needs a companion. I would ideally like to get an older budgie, but elderly birds are hard to find.
So what other bird species are compatible with budgerigars? I know cockatiels are one, but I'm not sure about any others. I would be keeping the two of them in a large cage. The door is open during the day, so they'll have roaming time.
I had a bonded pair of budgies, and the male died. I got a lineolated parakeet, also male, and he gets along famously with the female budgie.
My vet gave me a couple of very good ideas when putting two birds together - make sure there are two sets of food and water, so one bird can't keep the other one from eating or drinking. Also, for the first week or so, weigh each one and make sure no one loses more than 10% of their weight.
