What's the best large breed dog food that is relatively inexpensive?
We're feeding Iams now to our 2 weimaraners, but I heard it's not the greatest. But I can't afford to get designer organic food either. 40 lbs lasts for 3-4 weeks.
Hi, First thing I wanted to tell you was despite what many vets say, lams and Eukanuba,Science Diet and Hills are all crap. (Vets are payed to advertise and push all four brands) Ol Roy was on the recall list, it is absolute garbage STAY AWAY FROM IT!
Ol'Roy: Ground yellow corn, soybean meal, ground whole wheat, corn syrup, poultry fat, Meat and bone meal (Animal Fat Preserved with BHA and Citric Acid), Chicken by-product Meal, Rice, Animal Digest (BHA causes cancer in animals and humans)
Here is the first five ingredients in iams blue bag (proactive healthy weight): Corn Meal, Chicken By-Product Meal (Natural source of Glucosamine), Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Chicken

To Explain, DOGS CANNOT digest corn, it is used purely as a filler, it cause intestinal issues, and more has to be consumed in order for the dog to feel full. Brewers rice is another filler that dogs cannot properly digest, it also causes intestinal issues. ANYTHING with BY-Product in it is total garbage, it literally refers to taking chicken feet,beaks, feathers and disgustingly entrails, drying them out and grinding them up, it used for a filler and it has literally no nutritional value (but it is much cheaper for pet food companies then using real meat) (also when something says meat or poultry instead of specifying the exact kind of meat, it is because THEY DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW, so stay away from it) I don't even know what sorghum is but I know it shouldn't be in dog food and because of all of these fillers while the actual price of the kibble is much less, the dog consumes as much as three times more kibble then he/she would if you were feeding high quality food. (NOTE: These ingredients lead to kidney failure, liver failure, shortened life, other organ failure, constipation, dehydration and obesity)
Here are some examples of what good pet food should look like, when you go to pick one out, be sure it has absolutely no corn, no soy, no by-products of any kind and no brewers rice and make sure it does not say meat or poultry anywhere on the bag. Read the label really carefully.
Note: Chicken Meal (or any kind of meat meal refers to: "Chicken meal is the dry rendered (cooked down) product from a combination of clean flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone" (Bone is actually very good for dogs and cats as it is full of calcium and nutrients, Bone marrow is something dogs consider very tasty and it is good for them)
Canidae: Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Chicken Fat.
Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul: Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, ocean fish meal, cracked pearled barley, whole grain brown rice
Eagle Pack Holistic: Chicken Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Ground White Rice, Oatmeal, Chicken Fat
Evo: Chicken, Turkey, Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Potatoes.
Innova: Turkey, Chicken, Chicken Meal, Barley, Brown Rice.
Merrick: Organic Chicken, Oatmeal, Barley, Turkey meal, Duck, Whole Brown Rice
Orijen: Deboned chicken, chicken meal, turkey meal, russet potato, lake whitefish.
Wellness: Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Oatmeal, Ground Barley, Ground Brown Rice, Tomato Pomace
Wellness core: Deboned Turkey, Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Whitefish Meal, Potatoes
NOTE: Alot of people recommend Royal Canin, and while it's not awful, here are the first few ingredients: Chicken meal, brown rice, rice, oatmeal, chicken fat, corn gluten meal, natural chicken flavor. You can see that they still use corn and instead of using Chicken Flavor (Saves them money) they should use Real chicken.
ADD: I AM WITH CURTIS, HE IS COMPLETELY CORRECT, feeding raw is the healthiest, possible diet a dog or cat could have, it is what they were meant to eat, and it is what is best for them. Kibble is convenient so lots of people buy it, but its equivalent to humans eating frozen dinners every day for the rest of their life. (Somewhat tasty, but really awful for you in the long run)
