The world is divided on tofu. While half the human population treats this as a healthy Asian delicacy for lowering blood cholesterol, the other half cannot stand the blandness of this soybean food product. There is not a doubt, however, that everybody agrees on the new found usefulness of this lively little legume in an entirely surprising field: construction. Soy-based products have made quite a name in inks, cosmetics, soaps, fabrics, crayons, and biodiesel, but construction is an entirely different venue to establish this little bean's worth.
In New York City, soy grease keeps the elevators of the Statue of Liberty smoothly running up and down the elevator shafts. In Chicago, the John G. Shedd Aquarium boasts of soy-based roof coatings. In many offices all around the world, carpets are made with soy backings. And recently discovered are soy insulation foams to help homeowners save home energy and create more energy-efficient houses. Why should you follow suit? Here are six reasons why:
1. Soy insulation, unlike other types of insulation, serves as an effective barrier against the inflow of undesirable air from outside the house. Batts of fiberglass, for example, are impossible to fit into nooks and crannies that contain small holes and cracks. With spray-in foam insulation, even these once unreachable crevices can be tightly covered, thus preventing unwanted airborne elements such as dust, pollen, pollutants, and allergens from entering the house.
2. It is a safer alternative to using ordinary polyurethane spray-on foam insulation because soy-based foams do not contain volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that contribute to ozone layer damage, and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) used to spray the polyurethane into place. Soy-based insulation, instead, is blown into the walls using a clean and healthy agent-water.
3. Conditioned air inside a soy-insulated structure remains the way you want it to be conditioned because the spray-on insulation expands into 100 times its original size. The foam becomes a thick and rigid layer characterized by a high resistance to heat, making it a very effective thermal envelope to absorb all unwanted heat from outside the house in the summer and trap it in during the winter. Soy-based foams also have excellent acoustics, effectively barring out unpleasant sounds and noise pollution outside the house.
4. Soy insulation serves as an airtight seal that can help save home energy by reducing the cooling loads of a conventional heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system. This allows you to turn your home into a more energy-efficient structure and generate huge savings in the form of a diminished utility bill. When installed properly and installed in conjunction with an energy-efficient HVAC system, soy-based spray-on foams can cut down your electricity expenses by half the original size.
5. You are contributing to the worldwide fight against the destruction of the Earth by using a totally renewable resource-soybean oil produced by American farmers. More importantly, the use of a plant-based material to heat and cool a house reduces the amount of poisonous carbon emissions and greenhouse gases that are released into the atmosphere if a conventional HVAC and insulation system were used.
6. Lastly, soy-based spray-on foams are durable materials that will not yield to insect and rodent infestation. Contrary to popular belief, no insect, bird, or rodent will ever make a shot at eating your insulation because the soybean oil has lost all its food properties once mixed with other chemical catalysts that, when combined with it, make soy such a great product for insulation. Also, it has high moisture-resistance properties and will not easily give in to molds, mildews, and rotting.
