When it comes to illness it is always best to identify problems before they get out of control. This is usually difficult to do because the early signs are often subtle and could be due to something unrelated to illness. However, in the case of parrots, there 9 signs you can watch for and if your parrot exhibits more than one of these symptoms then you may want to visit the vet.
Here is a list of subtle cues that you can watch for in your feathered friend:
- he usually perches on one leg, but recently he started perching on two legs
- his feces are wet and sloppy, rather than dry and well-formed
- his vent is swollen and/or stained
- his eyelids are swollen or puffed
- his breathing has recently become heavy
- he is tired a lot
- he is not as lively during playtime as he used to be
- he is not eating as much as he usually does
- he is no longer offended and aggressive when I reach my hand into his cage and try to touch him
If you suspect your parrot is not feeling well then go through this check list over the next day or so and see how many of these symptoms he is showing. If he displays more than 2 or 3 of them I would recommend taking your bird to the vet straight away. Even if your vet only finds a minor problem it is better to be safe than sorry. You may want to keep this list near your parrot cage so it is handy when you need it.
