Turtles are one of the oldest animals on earth they have been around for over 200 million years. They are reptiles and evolved with the dinosaurs long before mammals or birds. Back then there were a few key differences between them and the turtles we see today. For instance turtles couldn't retract their head. Turtles are known for their long lives in fact many live for a 100 years and some turtles are massive! Weighing up to 1500 pounds nearly a ton!
The most distinguishing part of a turtle is obviously its shell. Its shell is actually made out of the same material as your fingernails and hair. This material called keratin and is made out of dead cells. The outside of a turtles shell is made up of plates called scutes. However the inside is what provides the shape and structure of the shell.
The inside of a shell is kinda like your ribs. It has vertebrae that supports the ribs which in turn provide support to the rest of the shell. The vertebrae up and down its spine changes dramatically as it goes up. In the base of the spine and in the middle the vertebrae are massive and cannot move however as it goes up the vertebrae gets much smaller allowing easier movement for the beck.
Shells vary from turtle to turtle. For instance a turtle that spends more time in the water will have a flatter shell to make it easier to swim. Aquatic turtles also can absorb oxygen from their skin (not the shell) which allows them to stay underwater for long periods of time. While land based turtles will have a shell that is more like a dome that makes it harder to break and offers extra strength. Though there are some rare exceptions to this rule as some turtles have a flat shell and then wedge themselves between rocks. Once between the rocks it makes the shell bigger by pumping it with air this make it extremely difficult to get out and eat.
Turtles despite poplar belief actually have a strong sense of touch. Even the shell has some sense of touch. But their strongest sense are sight and smell. There are some interesting facts about turtle reproduction. For instance they make sounds when they procreate. Also the heat of the surrounding area of the egg will determine which sex the baby turtle will be.
