How to sew through several layers of fabric?
I'm trying to add an edging to a quilt and I'm having real problems getting my sewing machine to sew through it. The needle locks up all the time, the thread underneath ravels and snags, and I keep breaking needles.
I'm sewing through six layers of cotton plus a thin and uneven batting. I don't mind about it looking pretty, but I do need it to be secure.
It's actually my husband's old quilt, made by his mother about 25 years ago. It's falling apart and it stinks because he never washed it. There was no way I could put it in the washing machine as it was, because it would have disintegrated completely, so I need to hold it together with this edging!
Any ideas on how to sew through several layers without damaging my machine?
- your stitch length should be the longest possible.
- use a thick needle & strong thread
- you can add strips of paper [newspaper or kitchen roll] under the quilt stitching line - this will allow the material to move evenly & smoothly over the jaws. after your work is over, just rip off the paper; it comes out very easily.
- my mother used to rub some clear candle wax along the stitch lines of any thick fabric for smooth running. it later gets washed off. but i think the paper idea is more convenient & quick.
- if nothing seems to work, you could try hand-sewing them together. since beauty isn't necessary, you could use relatively long stitches in strong yarn - it will be very durable for the next 25 years 
) also try laying it out in the sun for a few hours to get some stink out before you start hand-sewing coz that will take longer than machine sewing
