Cross bow problems....probably dumbassery....help me!?
I am not an archer.
With my crossbow, I can use field tips (85 grain) and get 5 inch groups at 50 yards. That's the best I can do.
I put those whizz bang 125 grain lock blade broad heads on and it appears my point of aim is dropping by over a foot at a mere 25 yards!
Is this normal?
I only have 1 pin on my sights, if this is normal, will I have to get multiples like on a regular bow? Is there a such thing as an 85 grain broad head that will effectively and ethically kill a deer without dorking up my site picture?
The other dumbassery part? Yesterday I climbed up into my stand that I had just freshly mounted on my bow range outside. I cocked the crossbow but didn't put an arrow in for safety sake.
Got settled in the stand and forgot to put the arrow in. Took a shot and tore the top of my thumb off...
Maybe I should stick with sewing or something...
It is perfectly normal for different weight tips to hit at different POI (point of impact). The heavier tips WILL drop more. Same thing happens with bullets when you fire a gun. There are 95 grain broad heads out there * they do fine on deer. The problem you will probably run into is that most broad heads will still have a different POI than field tips. This is because they have different aerodynamics. You might want to try "mechanical" broad heads. Those are the ones that keep their blades closed until they hit then open to penetrate. They tend to catch less wind so fly more like field tips. They are legal in MOST states but check your regs to make sure.
If you plan to shoot at different distances, you will need different sight pins. One pin is only good for one distance (more or less). You can hold over or under for different distances with one pin but you really need more pins. How many depends on what distances you plan to shoot & how much drop you have with your arrows.
Your thumb will heal. We learn by making mistakes. You won't make that one again. Besides, hunting is a lot more fun than sewing
