I have an african grey who likes to go outside. Right now I have a modified dog harness for him but I've ordered a bird harness and am waiting for it to come. I was wondering how cold of a day he can go out in. Last week the weather was so nice but now it is in the 60's. The lowest this week is 56 and the highest is 62. It should be a pretty sunny week so that should help with keeping things warm.
My birds wings are clipped but he's molting right now and they're growing back. I want them to mostly grow back again before I clip them again. Otherwise, they'll just grow back again in a couple of months. But I've read that even clipped birds if given the right wind can fly up. In fact, when I was a teenager I found a cockatiel who's wings were clipped that flew away from his owner. Luckily I found the owner and they were reunited.
Your African Grey will be fine in that weather. Parrots are able to handle colder temperatures even though they come from the tropics. It gets cold in the forest, too.
And yes, it is true clipped birds can still fly. It's best to teach your bird to recall to you so it understands how to fly, ascend and descend properly;
This makes it so that if you bird does get away from you, it can fly back. Most clipped birds are never taught how to fly by their owners so when they get away they think that the higher they are, the safer they are and they go up instinctually. The problem is, it's hardest for a bird to learn how to descend and if you don't teach it - then they don't know it.
