I was just wondering if any experienced pet owners could give me any tricks or advise on raising and taming them. Also, what are some household items they enjoy as toys? A friend mentioned that they low bottle caps, anything else?
ALSO-- I have some wild bird feed I feed the wild birds. Would it be okay to give him a little bit of that every now and then as a treat?
Well the best thing you can do for starters is to buy you parakeet from a breeder instead of a pet store (if you google bird breeders in your area and call around you can probably find one). Next watch the birds for a while and choose a bird that is alert, has clear eyes nose and vent, and has clean well maintained feathers. Do not choose a bird that looks sick or looks like he/she is sleeping in the corner all the time with his/her feathers rumpled. Ask the employees or breeder if they know anything about the specific bird you are interested in just to make sure everything is good with him. when you decide on a bird ask the employee or breeder if they could clip the wings if it hasn't already been done. Next you can take your bird to the vet (you'll probably have to google the vet too since most of them don't handle birds) to get a physical and the vet will probably also give him a vitamin booster and run tests for common infections. when you get your new pet home, put him in his/her cage and leave him alone for about the next week while he gets adjusted to his new home because all the moving around and poking and prodding is very stressful. you can still talk to him and reach in his cage to feed, water or clean but do not let him/her out yet and don't try to grab him/her. after he/her is nice and cozy i his own home feel free to let him/her and play with your new friend, just make sure all windows and doors are shut, fans ae off and any other animals you have that might want to hurt your bird are in another room. he will probably be scared of you at first so when him/her over with kindness. as far as food goes i would buy they seed that is meant for tropical birds because the outdoor seed is really high in energy, but no that healthy. if at all possible try to find a bird that is used to eating a mic of seed, pellets, fruits, and vegetables. as for treats the best thing you can give them is spray millet, they absolutely love it. the spray millet will also help the bird to trust you more as he/she is getting accustomed to you. For treats you can give them things like coconut shells, empty paper towl rolls maybe with some peanut butter and millet inside. plain paper towels or paper to shred. those little paper bathroom cups with treats in them. pretty much anything that they're not going to choke on or get stuck on is ok.
