I've had all kinds of cages that I've been told at the pet store "there is no way a bird can get out of".
Well, My clever Macaw, gets her way out of it no doubt.
She was never kept in a cage at her last house, she's a free spirit.
I wouldn't mind her walking around the furniture n my room, but she poops on everything.
I've tried even putting locks on the door of her cage, but she manages to squeeze out of the smallest holes, like the holes for putting the food dishes and such.
My experience is this Julio was kept in a small cage with tiny pvc perches. He is an adult Blue and gold macaw. I rescued him. I hung a hook from the ceiling with a rope/wire perch hanging from it. He lives on the perch now and since it hangs over his cage, he bathes and eats on the top of the old cage.
He does not roam and is very happy on the perch.
Your bird should not be allowed such freedom - a chomp on a lamp wire and she could be dead.
You must take control now. She is the boss and she knows it. Read Sally Blanchard's book "The Companion Parrot Handbook".
I have a very clever African Grey in a cage that he used to get out of. I am smarter than he, as you must become, and now I use quick links to lock doors and food dish openings.
Make the cage inviting with toys and things to chew. Give her treats ONLY when she is in the cage.
It isn't that she doesn't like the cage - she likes to be the boss.
Never let her walk around. You carry her and teach her Step Up.
