Helen of Troy 1 inch curling iron!?! Help with curling!?
So, I bought one today. I heard Helen of Troy (hot tools?) was a really good brand and my friend had one that worked well. I didn't want to go too big or too small so I just picked 1inch barrel. My hair is pin straight, but the curling iron heated up to like 450 degrees(i think) so I thought I would give it a try. Anyway, it kinda curled my hair but not really curled just made some wave. Within an hour with spray the curls/waves died. :[ I spent 28$ on it so I don't know if I should return it or not? How else can I get my hair to curl? And I wanted large curls so I don't want to get anything much smaller than a 1inch barrel.

Yikes. I know 28 dollars seems like a lot of money, but there is no speedier way to ruin your hair than by using a curling iron on. it. The heat literally bakes your hair, like you put it into an overn, only worse. Dries it out and then it will break, and split. And it won't take long for it to happen.
Take it back! There are much better ways to curl your hair. Here's a few of them.
One: first of all use a styling product on your hair first, dampen it only, don't soak it or it will never dry. Rub it through your hair, not too much, or your hair will end up sticky, or hard.
Two: you can use : a lot of velcro rollers, if your hair is hard to curl, use 1 inch diameter ones...if you have to anchor them further (they stay fairly well in your hair), use picks, not pins (or else you'll get funny looking ridges). Takes a couple of hours to get a good curl, use a hairdryer for a few minutes over the curlers, then let your hair cool to normal temp before you remove them.
Three: you can use STEAM rollers... they don't get too hot therefore are far less damaging to your hair than the curling iron. Don't use them everyday, it's best to rely on other means most of the time, but the steam rollers are good for when you are in a hurry.
Four: you can use braiding to give your hair waves.. it's not the same as curls, but if you sleep overnight with a bunch of braids, your hair will get some really nice waves, the tinier the braid, the smaller the waves.
Five: you can use 'rag' curlers.. this is what the women used a LONG time ago, you get strips of cotton fabric, dampen them then wind your hair around the middle of the strip, then tie a bow with the loose ends of the cotton. You can even sleep in them.
Anyway, good luck! I have straight hair too, and it's a pain in the butt!
