What parts are necessary when making a single speed road bike?
Hi guys, I'm thinking about buying a road bike frame and just compiling the parts for a project bike. I don't know much about bikes at all, so I was wondering if you guys could help me out. Exactly what parts would I need to make a singlespeed road bike, I only have the frame. Thanks.
you'll need a fork and headset (probably included) a stem, handlebars, a brake lever/caliper/cabling, a seatpost, a seat (duh), a bottom bracket w/ a crankset, pedals, a wheelset ( I recommend just buying some pre built wheels) and tires+tubes. you will also need a chain, and a bmx style freewheel cog (if it isnt included on the wheel already)
tools: Metric wrench set (parktool has the best), chaintool (get the pricey one- the cheap ones break after just a few uses- it's totaly worth it), set of hex wrenches, cable puller, vice grips, tire levers, pump, adjustable wrench, crank pullers, bb tool depending on what you end up with, pedal wrench, phillips head screw driver, allen key type wrench, and some bar tape.
Does this list look intimidating? It should. If you don't know what you need, you don't what you are doing. Go to your local bike co-op. Check to see if there is one in your area, they have all the tools, parts and knowledge you need, for a very cheap or even non-existent price.
Failing that, go to your local bike shop and talk to someone there. they can help you, but it'll probably be more expensive. I recommend finding a dumpster bike, taking it home and disassembling it completely. then try to put it back together. work methodically and slowly, and you'll learn a lot. that is how i learned about bikes
