Is there just simple things I could keep around or should I buy one already made?

The most essential thing is Blood-Stop. It is a powder that you put on wounds, including punctures, nails, wings, beaks etc.. and it will put a hold on the bleeding until you can get your bird to a vet, if needed.
That is one of the major things to have. That and a bird carrier that you can grab and go. You don't need a million things, you just need the primary things. Whenever you put together your kit, just remember to include things that will be necessary when it comes to your bird. Plan for every possible injury, keep as much as you'll need if you had to take a trip and just be sure to not skip on something because it may be too expensive.
I'd also say that you may want a towel or a cloth in case you have to hold your bird down to cut something off of it or to grab it from somewhere, especially if your bird has a biting habit. Scissors are also essential, I cannot tell you how many times I have ran around the house like a chicken with it's head cut off looking for scissors because my lorikeet had trapped her leg in the fabric of her bed.
