Cockatiel on medication?

My bird is going to the vet tomorrow, for what seems to be yet another sinus infection.

He hasn't had a sinus infection since we switched avian vets, so I am not quite sure what to expect. My old vet gave us enough amoxicillin for ten days, twice a day. It... worked, kind of. The sinus infection went away for about a month before we had to get another prescription of his meds.

The new vet we have now seems to know a lot more about bird medicine and birds in general, which is why we switched to him, but he seems to favor giving sick birds shots (we brought in another bird once for a bacterial infection, and he gave him a shot). I don't know how I feel about that idea, giving birds shots, but the amoxicillin didn't seem very effective.

Should I do whatever the vet recommends, or should I request one or the other? If so, which one?

If you feel comfortable and trust the vet, then follow his advice. The thing about birds and antibiotics is, they can quickly become resistant to them. What worked for you once, may be ineffective the next time and you will need to try another one. Another thing about them, they do not discriminate. They will kill all the bacteria in the bird's body including the beneficial "gut bacteria" that is necessary for proper digestion. If you are not already aware of this, be sure to discuss it with the Vet. Your bird needs some pro biotics to help replace the good bacteria. If you don't, he will be at risk for other health issues. It's pretty simple. If he will eat it, you can give him some active enzyme yogurt. You can also keep a supply of BeneBac on hand and sprinkle a little on his wet foods a few times a week. Just be sure to discuss it with your vet.
