If this is something that you suffer from, you are not alone. Many women take it as their lot in life that they will spend between one to five days a month in varying degrees of pain. The thing I would like to emphasise is that this is not normal, you don't have to live your life this way, and it can be treated very effectively with natural therapies. If you are using pharmaceutical analgesics from the chemist, many of these have side effects, particularly in high doses or taken over a long time. One of the many benefits of natural remedies is that there are no side effects, especially if they are professionally prescribed for you.
Painful periods occur when the uterus, which is a muscle, goes into spasm. Herbal treatment revolves around easing this muscle spasm with muscle relaxants. Magnesium is the mineral which assists with relieving all cramps, and is present in all herbs used to assist with painful periods.
If the pain is simply mild cramping for a day or two, the first thing I would suggest would be Chamomile tea. Brew yourself a cup every few hours during your period until the pain goes. Chamomile tea is such a safe, mild, gentle herb, it really is difficult to do yourself any harm with it.
Curling up in bed with a hot water bottle is another time tested home remedy. You can also try rubbing in some Woman Cream by Australian Bush Flower Essences. Amongst other things, it contains Crowea, which helps balance the uterus.
Valerian can also be of assistance as it is very high in Magnesium, a natural muscle relaxant. The tissue salt MagPhos is useful for the same reason. If taking any natural remedies, it is very important you do not exceed the recommended dosage. Herbs can have are strong effects and be harmful if not used as directed. Always follow the dosage on the bottle or as advised by your herbalist or naturopath.
If the pain is more intense, you really should consider getting professional help as there may be underlying causes. These can include undiagnosed fibroids, endometriosis or Chlamydia. All of these complaints can be treated with herbs but none should be self diagnosed or home treated as they are serious. As a guide, if you are needing to take more than the weakest strength of analgesics, you really should seek professional help.
There are a number of herbs for this stronger pain, all very effective. Even with underlying causes they can be used to keep you comfortable while the real problem is being addressed. Some of the women have come to see me have described pain so severe, they have been doubled over in bed for days, every month of their adult lives. To have this pain banished has been truly life changing for them and their only regret has been that they didn't know about herbs sooner.
Young girls in their teen years probably suffer from severe pain the most. The reason for this is uncertain. Perhaps it is the enthusiasm of youth at work in their uterus, or perhaps a deficiency of the mineral Magnesium. Regardless of the cause, this is really unfortunate as it sets up negative attitudes towards menstruation and femininity from an early age. Particularly if their mother has had a similar experience, they absorb the attitude that this is to be expected and something they just have to live with. I emphatically stand by the statement that this sort of pain is not normal and definitely doesn't need to be tolerated.
For the last few years I have been working a lot with the emotional aspect of menstrual difficulties. If you have such bad pain you can't leave the house, a revolutionary (these days) idea is that perhaps you aren't meant to. It is extraordinary the number of women whose dreadful menstrual symptoms improve when they make the decision to spend at least one day of their bleeding being quiet. Taking a break from ordinary life does wonders for a woman's mind, body, spirit and heart - as ancient cultures knew and honoured.
Forget all the hype that became popular in the 1970s about women can do anything when they are menstruating. This was designed by the early feminists as just one means of breaking the shackles that had been imprisoning women for centuries. They are horrified that it has been hijacked and translated nowadays into "soldier on regardless". Feminism in the 1960s was about choice.
If you are really honest, and tune into yourself and how you are really feeling, you will most likely realise that you are feeling lower in energy, sensitive, dreamy and generally unmotivated during menstruation. Try taking a break at this time from domestic, work and family responsibilities for one day and you will be astonished at the difference in yourself. For three months, choose to give yourself a "Red Tent Day" - staying at home, resting, meditating, drawing, journaling, singing, dancing, taking a bath, spending time alone, in nature, or with supportive female friends. Whatever nourishes and nurtures you.
I'm a great believer in the concept that physical dis-ease is created by thoughts, attitudes and emotions that are not in harmony. I see this clearly reflected in many of the women who come to see me, who are not happy with their lives in general, or their relationships in particular. More information on this concept is available in the book "The Wild Genie" by Alexandra Pope.
