Why is my 55 gallon aquarium getting dirty? I have 2 baby Tiger oscars in it. Got dirty in 2 days. Help?
I have a 55 gallon aquarium with 2 baby oscars in it, 1 is about 4 inches in length the other is about 3 inches. They're a pair. I got the tank on Friday and got it set up and let the water cycle for 24 hours, I then put the fish in it and took them about 2 hours to adjust. I fed them Aqueon Cichlid pellets the medium kind and the water seems a bit dirty like it's not clear. It looks like getting your glasses dirty with your thumb. ( My best analogy) It's running with two penguin emperor 400 power filters with new cartridges. The filters are running powerfully. Just wondering why after 1-2 days the tank got so dirty. I was under the impression that aquariums this large cannot get this dirty so quickly. Is it the food? Please let me know asap!
Your tank isn't cycled, and even small Oscars create a LOT of waste. 24 hours does NOTHING to cycle the tank, it's now just day old tap water. The cycle process started when you added the source of ammonia, the fish.
You can probably keep them alive by doing frequent water changes to get them though the cycle process, then the water should clear up, at least until the Oscars start getting too big for the tank, and they will.
New filter cartridges is about the worst thing, you need old gunge filled ones with the cycle bacteria in them. The most important part of the filter system is the biological filtering, and that relies on live bacteria living in the filter. New filter, no bacteria, the filters don't work.
55gal is not a big tank for Oscars, plan on about 90gal for a pair, and you don't know if the 2 you have are even a compatible pair yet. They don't sexually mature until they are 5 or 6" long, then you will find out if they will live together. They may, or may not.
Have a read here and you will see why you have having a bacterial bloom in the tank.

So go and change some water. With small fish you can get away with just adding fish and letting the tank cycle, but the waste from bigger fish like Oscars will pollute an uncycled tank very quickly.
But Oscars are pretty hardy, as long as you keep the ammonia and nitrite levels down with extra water changes they should make it.
