That's right, camping tents are like clothes. The style, size, durability, and cost of camping tents and clothes are very much dependent on you as an individual, what you do, where you go, your situation and where you're at in your life.
How can this be you ask?
Well, say you are young, carefree and have a good body. You can wear a small, skimpy bathing suit and wear it proudly. As you get older, you may want to cover up a little more.
When it comes to what you use as a camping tent, just a tarp tied off for a little protection from the sun, wind or mild rain can work, and can be compared to wearing a small bathing suit. As far as camping tents are concerned, It's small, provides only a little protection from the elements, and only gives you only a small amount of privacy. If you want more privacy and need more protection from the elements, you may want a better tent, possibly with a bathtub style floor to keep the water out. You may even want one with room dividers for that little bit of added privacy.
Now let's talk about size...because as I've been told, size does matter.
If you are buying pants and you have a 32" waste, getting into a pair of 30" pants is uncomfortable. So you always look at the size. We need to do the same thing, when buying a camping tent, because, and I repeat myself, size does matter. Keep in mind though that tent companies are usually very optimistic about the size of their equipment.
What some companies consider a two person tent, is usually only big enough for two people if those two people are children or just extremely close. I don't know too many adults who would be comfortable sleeping in a camping tent that allows only 2 feet of width per person, especially if they are a little on the large size.
For adults you may want three to four feet per person in width in your camping tent. You may also want something bigger if you want more room to move around, or even room for a couple of camp chairs and a small table. And let's talk literally, about changing clothes. How many changing rooms in department stores make you change stooped over or lying down. A taller, wider camping tent can definitely be more comfortable for sleeping, for changing in and for moving around.
How does your setting and what you do affect what you wear and the tent you use?
You wouldn't wear dress clothes while working in the yard, or to work if your job is as a machinist, or you are in construction. They're too lightweight and aren't very durable. And if it's cold you would wear heavier clothes that keep out the cold. If you're participating in sports, you may wear something a little more sporty versus dressing more conservatively when visiting your child's school.
The same is true with a camping tent, it's all situational. If you are camping in snow, a 4 season camping tent is more durable, does not have as much air flow in order to keep the cold air out, and sheds snow better. If you're camping in a warmer climate, or in the summer, a three season camping tent with plenty of ventilation is better. If you are backpacking, a lighter 1 to 3 person tent is in order. If it is a family outing with kids, a larger tent or a couple of smaller or medium size tents will work.
What it comes down to, is that what you wear and the type of camping tent you use are situational. They're based on what you do, who you're with, and your individual preferences. The level of comfort you're looking for, and making sure you have the right camping tent (or the right change of clothes) for a specific situation are important. So don't wear cut off shorts and a tank top to the office when the dress code says business casual and don't use an appropriate family size tent instead of just a tarp when camping with your family. Life will be much better.
