Next wash and dry in order to remove the allergens. Items that cannot be washed can be stored in the freezer for a full 24 hours to kill the mites but will still contain allergens.
While regular vacuuming of upholstered furniture and bedding can help to remove dust, it is not effective at removing the mites themselves or the allergens they cause. A HEPA filter should be used when vacuuming. Persons with severe problems may want to leave the vacuuming to someone else and stay out of the room until the dust settles again in about 20 minutes.
