In today's economy it's critically important to get the most you can for your purchasing dollar. My fiance and I are planning to cater our own wedding. We plan to do several appetizers, not a full on dinner. We hope to have 6-8 different appetizer choices along with fruit, veggie, and cheese trays. After speaking with several people they all suggested we go to Costco or Sam's Club for the food so we can buy in bulk and save money.
We want to have:
meatballs
taco cups
mini quiche
bruschetta
tortilla pinwheels
lettuce wraps
also, the veggie, fruit, cheese and cracker displays with various dips.
We plan to have 140 guests and live in the midwest.
How much would you expect to pay for all the food? Not including untensils and serving supplies. I would just like to know how much I should expect to pay for the food.
Also, is Costco the way to go or are there other resources better for catering your own wedding?

Go to Costco for the foods that are more basic, like cream and eggs and tortillas. Meat may be OK there as well. BUT I would go to a farmer's market for produce. It tastes better and may even be cheaper. Then I would splurge and go to a specialty market for cheese because it needs to stand on its own.
I have a very similar wedding (guests, menu, though a friend catered) and I am thinking the whole thing will cost 1-2K.
