Let's face it. You need a lot of things before you start producing honey. When have made up your mind to a beekeeper, it is also a necessity that you need the proper equipment to be able to take care of your bees and safely handle them when you finally harvest the honey they produce.
When starting your apiary (or beekeeping hive, just like the aviary, fancy word for bird cage), you need certain things to be present before you start taking care of bees. Remember bees are not like dogs or cats that can adapt to their surroundings. They are insects and have a programmed way to function. They remember things but only if it relates to their survival.
So, you would need several things in order to start your hobby. But where would you start? If you took beekeeping courses, they would probably give you some advice on what to have when taking care of bees. This would include a book or a guide on beekeeping, a suit, helmet and veil, gloves, a hive, your maintenance equipment like the hive tool, pliers, wires, extra frames, nails, etc.
For starters, the best thing to have is a complete set of tools and equipments even before ordering your first set of package bees.
The hive is probably the most important of them all since this will house your first queen and her workers. Packaged hives can be ordered assembled or unassembled, complete or just the basics to get started and in various types of wood. You must take the environmental factor when deciding on what type of hive you have to buy. There are certain types of wood that are resistant to mold or fungus when used in wet areas, so if you live in a mostly rainy location, you must look for wood that fits the environment.
There are also specific equipment that you need if you live in a location that snows. You need to keep the temperature of the bee hive at roughly 95 degrees fahrenheit or they will either swarm to warmer areas or just die.
Last but not the least are the various things you need for bee maintenance. This might include fungicides and other medicines that will prevent any pest from infecting your bees and keep them in good shape.
All these things you need to thin about when planning your apiary to keep bee losses at a very minimum and keep your bees always contented and living peacefully with you.
