German Shepherd puppies can be a handful to have around the house because of their highly active nature. When coupled with their innate intelligence, confidence and sense of belonging in a group, you will have puppies that provide for challenges not found in other breeds. Still, the joys of having these dogs as domestic pets make all these challenges worthwhile.
The trick is in knowing how to prepare your home for your puppy. So, the question remains: What steps can you make to prepare the way for the new additions to the family?
Relaxed Atmosphere
No matter how well you have bonded in the first few hours at the dog breeder's facility where you chose from among litters of German Shepherd puppies, your new pet should be given sufficient time to adjust to its new surroundings. You want it to be introduced to a relaxed atmosphere, a relaxed routine and a quiet life in the house, at least for the first few days. If you have children in the house, you should teach your children not to play with the puppy in ways that can overwhelm it. Basically, no teasing, no pulling and pushing as well as no rough play are the rules.
Not only will it provide sufficient time for acclimatization, so to speak, but it will also provide time for the puppy to develop a stronger body. Keep in mind that GSD puppies are as delicate as their adult counterparts are strong. It also helps to keep to the regular feeding schedule the puppy had in the kennel. Ask the breeder about it so that you may be able to replicate it at home even down to the brand of dog food used.
Crate Training
It is often best to bring home your new pet in a crate, which is a portable metal cage. You should not be averse to the idea as there are many benefits to create training. For one thing, your puppy automatically has a place to sleep in the house even when his beddings are already available. He can sleep in the bedroom together with his new companions instead of, say, in the basement or the garage. At the very least, you are telling the puppy that it is now part of the family.
For another thing, you can easily housebreak Shepherd puppies through crate training. Usually, you should teach the puppy specific signals to signify that it is time to go to the bathroom, which should be on a regular and frequent basis.
Socialization Opportunities
You must not forget to provide socialization opportunities for German Shepherd puppies. This is very important as adult German Shepherds tend to become overprotective, aggressive and aloof when socialization opportunities were not provided in their early dog years.
Socialization means exposure of the German Shepherd puppies to and around people, the home environment and the community and, more importantly, other dogs both of the same breed and not. You will soon observe that your German Shepherd grows to become a confident, assured and friendly animal.
