I purchased the 50D a couple weeks ago and could not be more satisfied with this camera. I have found this camera to take fantastic pictures and pretty easy to navigate. So if your on the fence about weather or not this camera is for someone new to SLRs I would say with a little patience and practice your going to love this camera. I'm so glad I went ahead and purchased the 50D as my next step up in taking great photos.
I especially love the aperture priority, shutter priority, and fully manual modes this camera has. Its definitely not a simple point and shoot. You can take simple pictures using the various feature "canned" modes. But please do yourself a favor and learn some simple definitions and relationships the shutter, f-stop, and white balance have. Having full control over the camera will really take those shots to the next level.
ap·er·ture
1.
an opening, as a hole, slit, crack, gap, etc.
2.
Also called aperture stop. Optics. an opening, usually circular, that limits the quantity of light that can enter an optical instrument.
f-stop
the setting of an adjustable lens aperture, as indicated by an f number.
And shutter speed is a common term used to discuss exposure time, the effective length of time a camera's shutter is open.
Once you learn about these you will find out all about proper exposure and exposure control. You will also have tons of enjoyment experimenting with your Canon 50D, or Digital Rebel.
