Men, if stigma wasn't an issue, would you want to be a stay at home dad?
Would you enjoy staying home cooking, cleaning, and caring for babies and small children? Or would you consider it degrading to spend your days changing diapers, thawing out breast milk or preparing formula in bottles, going to doctor checkups, grocery shopping, mopping, picking up toys, and any of the other tasks stay at home moms and stay at home dads do? I'm not trying to aggravate anyone either. It's a sincere question to know the male point of view. Pretend there is no societal stigma against stay at home dads for this question.
Larster and Ryan, I wasn't trying to bash males. My own husband is a nurturing man and would love to stay home with our kids if his job wasn't higher paying than mine. Some women also say housework and childcare are degrading, so take it easy.
I'd do it if I had to. I don't know if I'd enjoy it or not, I'd have to do it to see. It probably wouldn't be my first choice but who knows what might happen down the road.
For the record I'm unmarried and have no kids, so this is really a hypothetical question for me.
Public stigma actually doesn't concern me much, although it would probably get on my nerves to hear, and if I ever had to get another job down the road it would make things much tougher because of that so it could be an inconvenience. But it would be what I'd face from my own family that concerns me. I have some pretty traditional people in my family who think things are never supposed to change.
