People have been fascinated and captivated by parrots for hundreds of years and it is no mystery why, with their striking plumage, natural intelligence and sociable personalities. This fascination has led many to actually adopt a parrot of their own and the suitability to individual owners can be matched by the large variety of parrots available as pets, from a Budgie all the way through to a McCaw and everything in between.
Although there will be minor differences in the care requirements of different species of parrot, there are some fundamentals that have to be learnt, understood and implemented by all parrot owners to ensure that their feathered friend is kept healthy, both physically and mentally.
Probably the single biggest contributor to your parrots health and well being is the diet that you feed them and also the frequency and intervals at which you feed them. They should be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening as this would be consistent as if they were in their natural habitat, so leaving out a lunch is actually good for them. It is important that your parrot is fed a balanced diet of fruit and vegetables, parrot pellets and good quality seed as well as fresh water.
The position and condition of the parrots home, their birdcage, is also important. The birdcage should be placed in the home so that the parrot can receive enough interaction to stave off boredom but also where it is quiet enough for them to receive enough sleep each day, so away from those late night T.V programs!!! Their cages should always be kept clean as you want to minimize the risk of them contracting an infection or disease, so you should wash their toys, perch, food and water dishes regularly with warm water and a mild soap. This cleanliness regimen should also be extended to yourself when you are preparing your parrots food for the same reasons. Parrots in the wild make use of rain showers to keep their feathers and plumage in pristine condition and owners can mist or bath their birds once a day using fresh clean water from a sprayer or a water bottle. Finally the birdcage should be sufficiently large enough so that your bird can spread their wings fully within the cage as well as being able to house 3 or 4 of their toys.
