Hi i've been keeping a diary of my budgies in breeding box can u please have a look please??
I've been keeping an eye on by budgies their a male and a female in a breeding box. I wrote down some things what their doing.
The male is called Charlie and female Paige?
1. Ripping up newspaper which catches their dropping both of them are doing that?
2. Charlie trying to hop onto Paige but paige just flys away?
3. Hopping into nestbox and moving the woodshavings around?
4. Grooming each other (well piaige is grooming charlie but i havent seen charlie grroming her) ?
5. Paige gnawing perches aswell of wood in the cage?
6.Both birds sitting in nestbox making nests.
7. Charlie is eating the lettuce but Paigie doesn't?
8. Paige hasn't started to chew the cuttlefish?
What does this all mean their going to mate soon.
Been budgie career for the last 4yrs 1st year breeding.
1. Their newspaper should be underneath a grate so they can't get into their poo & old seeds
2. The female Budgie may not like the male Budgie, or be too young to breed. If this is their first time breeding, it takes a while for them to 'get the hang of it.' Plus parrots are as choosy about their mates as people are. They pick their mates, we don't.
3. Budgies don't use nesting materials in the wild or in captivity- so don't worry about them pushing the shavings out. But you will need to KEEP on adding shavings when the babies hatch to discourage deformities like Splayed Legs when the babies hatch
4. Parrots will always groom flockmates. It's a friendly guesture.
5. Gnawing wood is typical parrot behavior, but excessive wood chewing in Parrots stimulates breeding behavior as well as is a sure sign they will breed soon- Since most species of parrots will hollow out a tree cavity in which to lay eggs & raise young, therefore making lots of wood chewing a sign of the urge to breed & raise young.
6. Budgies don't "make nests," more than likely they are checking to see if the nesting box is up to their liking and trying to push out the shavings you've given them to nest with.
7. Lettuce gives birds diareha and should be avoided. Wild Budgies don't eat foods high in nutrients or water content. Try giving them less watery foods with more nutrients around this time, like vitamin A, calcium, fat & protein.
8. She will chew the cuttlebone as soon as she starts laying eggs
Though this is not breeding season for Budgies (Where I am, at least) these are all signs of breeding in Budgies. Budgies are very prolific breeders in captivity, and usually if they are old enough (2+ years) they will begin breeding as soon as given a nestbox and the right foods & circumstances.
