Regardless of indoor or outdoor, mama cats choose a place that feels safe to them, that is soft, that will help contain their newbornes, that is protected from weather, and that is safe from predators.
I built my cat's nesting box (indoor birth) from a cardboard box. It was big enough for her to turn around in and to change positions and still have enough room for her and her kits to stretch out in. It should be tall enough for her to stand without crouching, but too tall for the kittens to climb out of. The box was also small enough for her to feel safe and to ensure that the kittens didn't straggle too far away from nursing range.
You can use cardboard, or you can use a large cat carrier, or even better, an outdoor dog box.
If you use cardboard, cut a large opening in the side for her to enter comfortably, leaving a large enough lip at the bottom (atleast 5 inches high) to prevent kitten escape.
Line the nesting box (or carrier or dog box) with newspaper and then a soft towel or blanket over the paper.
Place the box in a place where it will be safe from weather, but also where she will see it and use it. If cardboard box, try to cover it (bottom too) with a tarp if it is in danger of getting wet.
Show her the box, and maybe even encourage her into it with food or treats, so she knows this is her box.
After delivery, place a small dish of water near the box, and a small dish of dry food. Don't disturb her during delivery. Cats rely soley on instinct, and instinct tells them to do this alone.
Once the kittens are born and she has had time to rest and nurse them, change the towel and paper, ONLY if she seems comfortable with you near the box and her babies.
