In 1908 the Chiltern Toy Works was opened. It wasn't until 1915, though that the first teddy was produced, being the 'Master teddy'. This happy little teddy was made in five sizes, and was dressed in dungarees and a cotton shirt. With a comparatively large head, he had a wide grin and large opaque eyes.
In 1920, the firm went into partnership with H G Stone, to form H G Stone and Company, operating from the Chiltern factory. The business was successful, which allowed the opening of a second factory in 1921. Tags using the name 'Chiltern Toys' were first used in 1923 with the introduction of the range of teddy bears known as 'Hugmee'. They only had a cardboard chest tag which said 'Chiltern Toys Trademark/Made In England'. The Hugmee teddies were the main type produced between the mid 1920s to the 1950s. Of note, the embroidered noses used on the bears were similar to those of Joy Toys teddies, in which an outer stitch was raised higher than the other stitches on each side. Each bear was fully jointed however. Made from mohair, woodwool stuffing was used in the head and kapok was placed in the arms, legs and body. Each had an embroidered happy smile. 1940s Hugmees, though, had flatter muzzles, and often had rexine pads. The Hugmees of the 50s were similar to this, with good mohair, and with a printed label.
The 'Silky teddy' was made from art silk plush and was introduced in the late 1920s. Those made from art silk bears during the 40s had a more grim face, and had large round ears, small feet and had cotton 'sub' stuffing. Often there was a music box placed within the bears.
From 1945-67 each teddy had a label that stated 'Chiltern Hygienic Toys/Made In England.
In 1967 the company became a subsidiary of Chad Valley. The tags now gave both names- 'Chad Valley/Chiltern' for the next few years, until 1973 when all but two of the Chad Valley factories closed down.
