The question of whether or not you should clip your pet birds wings can be emotive one depending on which side of the fence you are sitting. Some bird owners have it done as a matter of course and others are adamant that it is cruel and unnatural. So, what do you think?
Whilst I am all for keeping things as natural and unspoilt as possible I also believe there are circumstances that make clipping your birds wings a sound and right choice. I believe the following to be a good guide as to when you should consider having your birds wings clipped.
- If you are going to allow your parrot out of his cage then clipping his wings can be done for safety purposes. After all you don't really want your bird flying into the kitchen while you are cooking, into a window pane your bird can't see, landing behind your fridge or stove or even into the fireplace with a fire burning.
- There is also the pain of losing your bird. If you are quite adventurous with your bird and take him on outings clipping his wings will make it that much easier to retrieve your bird should he fly off for any reason. You can also let him out of his cage in the house and not have to worry too much about open windows although it is never a good idea to leave your parrot unsupervised if he is out of his cage. In this respect parrots are not really any different from children. Leave them to their own devices and anything can happen!
- Clipping your parrots wings also helps to calm problematic and aggressive behavior which in turn can help to save your precious furniture from the unwanted attentions of your bird's beak.
As you can see there are circumstances in which it makes sense to clip your birds wings but the final choice obviously lies with you the bird owner.
Should you feel it necessary to have your birds wings clipped then please make sure you only use the services of a qualified avian vet. Different types of birds need different clippings so you really do need to employ the services of a qualified and experienced vet.
