OK, so you have trained hard all year, you are 20 miles from the finish looking good stuck in the pack, then all off a sudden the pace seems to get faster. Before we start it is very important that you have been cycling for at least a few weeks. You must have a base a sufficient fitness base or otherwise you are not going to see the right improvements from these workouts, also you will be in a lot of pain.
Training for VO2 MAX intervals
This will help us when we need that little bit extra at the end of a cycle. It will give us more power in the legs, which will improve your overall speed. It will help you get up those hills faster than ever.
So what does VO2 MAX intervals involve?
Basically we are pushing to or maximum, if you have a burst of speed at the end of the set then you have not pushed yourself hard enough.
Start with a good hard warm up, so you are ready for the sets
• Pick a hill, not too steep, but not too easy either.
• Pick as big a gear as you can manage.
• Pick a distance and cycling as hard as you can 100% effect
• Use a heart rate monitor, you need to be getting over 80% of you max heart rate
• Repeat this for 4-5 sets. Your legs should be burning up with lactic acid!!
By the end of the sets, if you can manage them! The idea is that you will be pushing yourself so hard that you will not be able to finish the sets; if you can finish them you are not pushing yourself hard enough.
By doing V02 MAX intervals or otherwise called power training will improve your cycling overall. So get to it.
Next we will look another interval set interval trainer. If you are trying to up your speed in a race there is no point in trying to train at lower speed than that you are going to race at. You need to train at your race speed or higher to see results.
