Is it possible for a parakeet to live a shorter life based on diet?
I read somewhere that if you only feed parakeets seeds (like the store bought bird foods) that they only like for about 5 years due to malnourishment...rather than feeding them fresh fruits and vegetables which allows them to live their life to the fullest. Just wondering if this was true of not because ive been trying to convince my parents to let me get a parakeet but they said they don't want to deal with it once i go to college in 3 years.
That is absolutely true. A diet that is more than about 20% seeds, with the rest being pellets, fresh fruits and veggies and many other food items, is at great risk of fatty liver disease. But diet is not the only thing you have to consider. If you have never had a bird in your home before, you also need to do research on all the toxic items and products you have around that you cannot use once there is a bird in the home. Keeping any kind of bird is not a simple matter, nor is it inexpensive. Just because it may not cost much to buy some of the smaller birds, everything else is the same as if you had a big Macaw or anything in between.
