Male parakeet pushed eggs out of nest box, and covered them up in bottom of cage, mother not sitting, why?
My birds are almost 2 yrs old. And they mated several times, that i know of. I had a wooden nest box, but neither would have anything to do with it. The nest i have now is a straw, house looking nest, bought from Petco. They are eating very well, and have a variety of foods and goodies, they are SPOILED! I have shavings in the bottom of their cage, and the male pushes eggs out of the nest and covers them up with shavings. I just dont know. Should I just leave them alone on the bottom of the cage??? HELP!!!
Hum, What kind of nest do you have?
It could be that your birds are too young to be raising young and just don't know what to do about it.
Sometimes if something is lacking in the diet they will not watch their next or push out eggs. Or if they are being disturbed too much.
How old are your birds? Are they getting a rounded diet with more than just seed? Are you looking in the nest box too much, or handling the eggs?
If you answer yes to any of these questions, you need to fix what you are doing... if the birds are not old enough or not on a good enough diet, then remove the nest box, feed a better diet with veggies and fruit, and try again later. If you are in the nest box too much.. then back off of it.

You have shavings on the bottom of the cage, but not in the nest. And the nest is probably too small if it is one of the straw finch nest....
That might be the problem. Parakeets like to nest in shavings. I would suggest, taking out the nest for a few weeks, to let them settle down. And removing the shavings from the bottom of the cage. Then in a few weeks, try putting the wooden nest box back on, rather than the straw one... and put a good layer of shavings in the bottom of it to encourage "dad" to keep the eggs inside as he might be thinking it is best to keep them on the shavings (especially if he had nested in shavings before)...and is confused that they are out in the open (so he covers them up.
Anyway.. That would be my suggestion.
