Pet finches become pets that we enjoy watching, listening to so much that we look forward to out time with them. They are easy to care for, and are full of energy that makes us wonder why we ever had a home without them. As pleasant as they are, we need to give them the right surroundings to make the right home for them.
These wonderful, tiny, pretty finches need a cage that is at least two and a half feet (or 30 inches) in length. Finches are small so the bars need to be close enough to prevent injury to the birds or their escape. Finches are extremely energetic, releasing most of their energy through flying so it is recommended that the cage be big enough to provide flying space. Many finch owners have several cages, one is used for living while another is used to house the finch while the other is being cleaned.
A number of items should be provided inside the cage for the birds. Separate finch feeders for food and water should be available at all times. Extra dishes for treats and grit can also be set within the cage. A small dish for a bathe placed inside the cage several times a week would be useful. A nest box would provide a good place to sleep. Perches of various sizes, places randomly throughout the cage for rest area is a good idea. Perches of different materials is also a good idea. Cement perches are used to trim toe nails, Natural perches of elm, maple, pear, poplar or cherry are good for exercise. To prevent mites a "bird protector" disk attached to the side of the cage is useful. The bottom of the cage can be sprinkled with grit, or grit paper.
Plastic rings, bells or other shiny items can be used for entertaining these lively birds. Toys made especially for birds can be purchased from a local pet store. Changing the toys often keeps the finches interest in them, so rotating them would be a good idea.
Cleaning the cage at least once a week helps the Finch stay healthy. Cleaning is simple with hot soapy water being used on both the cage and accessories. Make sure that everything is rinsed and dried before bringing the Finch back inside the cage. Lining the bottom of the cage with paper towels, newspaper or brown bags cut to size is also a way to keep the cage clean.
