I am retired, living on social security, do not have a lot of money to spend on a bird.
I would like one that is considered very trainable, as I have plenty of free time on my hands and would like to teach him some tricks.
I am not one of those people that has an extra $100-$20000 laying around to spend on a pet bird.
My niece has a parakeet, and I see they are only around $14 or so.
They can also be trained I see.
But as I have been searching around the net, I see some of the SPCA sites in some cities have more exotic/other species available for adoption.
If i am willing to drive to Tampa from JAX I can even adopt a parrot. which I hear if you buy one in the pet store can be very expensive.
What are considered the best trainable species, for the most affordable price?
Please advise me how to go about to get the best bird on a budget and a very trainable species..

Adopting a bird is a great idea! I have an African grey and she is 18, I have had her for three years. She is my best pal!
Make sure to do lots and lots of research. Birds are very high maintenance pets, and require lots and lots of time and attention (though it sounds like you have time, which is great!). I take my Grey to work with me every day, and whenever I am home she is out of her cage.
Beware that birds can also be VERY loud, and are quite messy creatures! I have to vacuum every day because my Grey throws stuff out of her cage! Also birds respiratory systems are very delicate, so you cannot use teflon pots and pans, or air fresheners, etc.
If you want a playful parrot, you might consider a Caique or a Quaker Parrot. Both are funny little clowns! They also love hanging out and are very affectionate.

However be aware that to adopt a bird you are still going to have to pay the adoption fee, which is going to be around $100. Also it costs me about $25 a month for food and toys for my birdie. Parrots need a special diet too, not seeds. I feed my parrot Zupreem Pellets, as well as frruit, veggies, and I also share what I cook for myself.
