Parakeets little cackles seem to get on my nerves.
However even though I adore canaries to the highest of Heavens above, I believe they have to have a specific type cage which there's no room in here for an extra high birdcage.
And it MUST be set up in a high place due the pet cat.
and parrots are too expensive
there are many other different type of birds out there.

First of all I have a cat & 3 birds, what's the problem with this??? They live great together!!
Canaries have a specific cage requiement yes, but it is not hieght they need, it is length. A canry needs to lave a long cage as they get their excersise flying across rather than up & down. Generally a good sized cage is one where you can place 2-3 perches & the canary HAS TO fly from perch to perch, not jump.
If you have the room for a 'normal' cage but extra length not height you might be fine for a canary.
A parrotlet or lovebird would be other good choices to start with as you can tame & train these, finches but again they fall in the same cage requirements as canaries do.
