Most of the time,the rat food I buy has too much "filler" stuff in it, like tiny bird seeds that my rats never eat. I like getting them food that has a bunch of different things like dried banana slices, crunchy crackers and such because I know there are a bunch of different tastes to stimulate them rather than plain lab blocks. So I was wondering if I could feed them Parrot food since it has bigger pieces and a larger variety of stuff. I just wasn't sure if it wasn't good for them.
No, rats need either home-made rat mix http://www.ratsrule.com/diet.html supplemented with low-fat, low-protein dog food, or lab blocks. Harlan Teklad and Mazuri are the best lab block brands, but Altromin will do in a pinch if you can't get the other two. NOT Kaytee! Kaytee blocks contain carcinogenic preservatives, and rats already get tumours far too easily.
Parrot food, hamster mix etc. are formulated (supposedly) for other animals with completely different nutritional requirements. The "rodent" seed mixes found in pet shops or grocery shops are basically ratty junk food - they're all full of nuts, sunflower seeds, etc. which contain far too much fat and/or sugar to be anything remotely related to "healthy". Too much fat = overweight rats, and overweight rats = tumours.
