Breeding questions for Amazon Parrot?
OK, so Im not the one doing the breeding, but someone who has never bred birds before is. I want them to have the best information so Im asking what sites are the best to do research on. This person has had Amazons for a number of years but not for breeding.
Now they want to breed so what are some good tips, sources, do's and dont's
First, realize that you can have them as pets or breeders, but not both.
You'll need a cage big enough for 2 amazons and a large nestbox. The nestbox should be accessible from outside the cage, i.e., the lid needs to be outside the cage where you can access the eggs/babies from outside. The nestbox should not be in direct sunlight.
The birds must be pair-bonded before they will even consider breeding. Some parrots just aren't compatible together, some are, and it may take a few years to find out. Just because you put 2 birds together, doesn't mean they will even be friends, much less ever mate. Most amazons should be 5-6 years minimum before breeding. Amazons must be DNA sexed in order to determine sex.
If you plan on handfeeding babies, you take them from the parents when they are about 1 month old and feed them yourself 4 times per day with a spoon or syringe and baby parrot handfeeding formula.
Most amazons breed in April/May/June, so you've missed this year's breeding period.
