Hey. Ive had a pet scaly breasted lorikeet a few years ago, for about 3 years, but sadly my cousin let him out by accident a week before he was due to get his wings clipped and he flew away. I loved having him heaps and have been looking into getting another bird, but this time I would love to get something bigger and more talkative, but I dont know what types would be good... I really love the look of sun conures for theyre personality and affection, and electus for their size and talking ability. Any info on other types of bigger parrots that are talkative, calm and cuddly/affection would be great, thanks! Im also not looking to spend over about $1500 since I want to get lots of toys and a big cage, play stand etc.
There are a lot of great midsized birds out there, but I've had great experiences with my quaker. If they are legal in your state. They are extremely loving and cuddly, and the males talk pretty well. They do get kind of attached to certain people, and can pick out "enemies" that they will attack if they get close enough, but they are friendly to strangers. Mine loves to play and snuggle. She mimics noises I make but doesn't talk. She's extremely spoiled and eats absolutely anything. Her favorites are chicken, shrimp, and oatmeal at the moment I think.
She rules the house and the dog and cat don't dare mess with her. She's been clipped her whole life but even when her wings grow back she doesn't fly. I don't think she knows she can... once she got caught in the wind and was absolutely terrified.
They are very intelligent birds and she constantly tries to find ways of getting food... she's taught herself tricks and can identify the sound of somebody getting food no matter what it is. She loves to be pet and get attention though. She'll "kiss" when I kiss her.
Quakers are some of the more inexpensive species... you can get greens at $150-250 and blues run around $400-600. They are a great species.
Another bird to check out is the caique. These are extremely playful birds and I've heard they make very good pets.
