Which parrot would you recommend?
I am interested in adding a parrot to my family and have been for several years now. I've owned birds in the past, my mother and I raised budgies and cockatiels, and I worked in a pet store with Macaws for about a year. I've read every book I can find on parrots for the past two years and have it narrowed to a few, but I'm curious to see what parrot savvy people would recommend for me.
Cost isn't a big deal. I can afford the monthly costs of any parrot and if I have to save longer for the bird and cage, then so be it. I don't much care if it talks and size isn't really an issue either. I also don't care if its the most beautiful bird or not, it'd be a nice bonus, but its not what I'll base my decision on. I just want a bird with a good personality; one that's friendly, fun, and doesn't mind cuddling sometimes. I don't mind spending several hours a day with it, in fact, I look forward to it.
So, given all this, what would you recommend and why? Thanks
I would probably get a cockatoo because they are very smart, love to be with people, are quite pretty, and have an actual personality. Cockatoos love pranks and have a very distinct personality. They don't turn into one-person-birds and are great in crowds so if you ever have friends over, you don't have to worry about the bird being mean or getting scared. Macaws are pretty and can be nice, but 9 times out of 10 they like one person and are mean or at least not loving to others. The only bad thing about cockatoos is they need to be trained (which you seem capable of) and they chew like crazy! If you get a bird who loves to chew, I would recommend getting a few "chime time" brand toys because they are colorful, fun, and don't wear out easily. Please let us know what you end up getting!
Edit: I would get a goffins cockatoo because they are small and are so playful and loving. They would give their left leg to get to play and cuddle with you all day. Umbrellas are sweet too but can get very loud. Lesser Sulfur crested are also loving, but they aren't quite as playful. Also, I think it's always better to adopt the larger birds because they are just as trainable and you don't have to put up with them through the "teenage" year. If you would like help finding a rescue aviary in your area, please email me and I can set you up with a great one.
