My Quakers beak is broken?
I've done as much research as I can but still don't understand exactly how the parrot beak grows etc. I noticed my Quakers beak was getting quite long and noticed today that the very tip has actually broken off about 1 - 2 mm. This isn't the first time it's happened. Just wondering if this is normal? It didn't break off enough to bleed or anything, and it doesn't seem him bother him, he's sitting on my shoulder preening my hair with his beak as we speak. If someone can give me more info on this and tell me if it's okay for it to be breaking off the tip when it gets too long that would be great.
I would say that it probably isn't getting enough calcium. Also, you can put a cuttle shell (they are really cheap in any pet store and are white) in the cage. Those are used to sharpen beaks on. The big thing to watch out for is making sure you witness your bird being able to still crack seeds to feed itself. Sometimes beaks grow back quickly, sometimes quite slowly. Just be sure to take it to a vet to be shaped if the bird isn't able to do it on its own correctly, or if it gets overgrown. Good luck!
