The winters can be quite cold and harsh for our little feathered friends. While it's true, a lot of birds fly south for the winter, some birds do not and have to make do where they live. Here are a couple of tips on how to create a heated bird bath.
Build a small wooden box (similar to the size of a bird house) with a roof and an entrance hole or door for the birds. Next insert a small clip-on lamp or spotlight through the bottom of the box and place a metal pan over it and fill with water. The heat from the light keeps the water warm enough so it doesn't freeze and the outside birds seeking water or shelter find this to be sufficient. It keeps them out of the wind also.
You could also use a heated dog dish for a winter bird bath. This would require an electrical outlet but you could run an extension cord out to the area. I have placed it on top of my summer bird bath so it's up off the ground. They are used to going there for water anyway.
Another idea would be to use a slow cooker or roaster on low setting. Fill the water almost to the top and then put branches or sticks across the top so they can perch there and drink the water. You could also place a tall rock down in the water with the top exposed and they would stand on it to reach the water.
Of course if you have a few dollars to spare, you could invest in a bird bath de-icer. These aren't too expensive and would require a electrical outlet but would ensure our feathered friends had the water they need.
Don't just assume the animals that you enjoy so much in the spring, summer and fall will make it through the winter. It doesn't take much to put something in place.
