A favorite hobby for many people that does not require a lot of expense or travelling is watching birds in your own backyard. It is a very interesting and restful experience as you watch many different species and note how they live their daily lives.
Food is the number one requirement for drawing birds to your yard. They need lots of food to provide the energy needed to perform daily routines. So, this is an good place to start. Set up a feeding station to draw birds to your backyard. Most birds like sunflower seeds and millet seeds. Begin with these two seeds so birds will know where to find good food. As more and more birds appear in your yard, you will be able to detect the different habits of certain species. Birds also love natural seeds that are already growing in your yard, such as flower seeds, niger and berries. Cracked corn and chopped apples and apple cores also attract many varieties.
When large flocks come to your feeders, debris builds up underneath them. This will bring the ground feeders such as doves. To bring birds to your stations, the only thing you need is a large supply of seeds and trays to them in. Use several sizes and styles of trays and there are many discount stores and pet supply stores that have a large selection available at reasonable prices.
Some birds are aggressive and chase other birds away. By watching every day, you will be able to observe how birds communicate and interact with each other and the basic habits of each species. A surprising fact is that birds watch out for each other. Larger birds like blue jays, crows and doves warn others when a predator is in the area. Most adult birds will help defend nests of eggs or baby birds of all species.
Birdbaths are another great way to draw birds to your yard. They provide a fresh supply of drinking water and bath water, especially during hot dry spells. There are many styles of birdbaths. A popular one is the pedestal with a basin on top. You can just use the basin right on the ground or at various heights around the yard. Pedestals look good in the middle of a lawn while others can be placed under trees or in protected areas of flowers or bushes. Clay or plastic saucers that are used under potted plants make excellent baths.
Using dark or black saucers in winter months help absorb the sun's rays and prevent the water from freezing too fast. It is a good idea to clean the birdbaths to stop the algae and insect larvae from growing. A stiff brush will help clean up this problem.
Preventing theft of the food supply by squirrels or raccoons is essential because if the food station is empty, birds will move elsewhere. For feeders mounted on a post, place far away from branches or roofs so they can't jump on them. Slip plastic or metal pipes of the correct size on posts under feeders so the pests can't climb them. For hanging feeders, a good trick is to put a large circular basin over them and far enough away from tree trunks and structures so that squirrels can't grab the feeder. Stores have many products designed to prevent predators from getting at the food. To further hinder the thieves, rub petroleum jelly to posts and wires or chains of feeders. Keep close watch on your yard everyday because squirrels are smart creatures who can figure out a way to get to the food. As you watch every day, you will pick up new ideas to enhance the area and make it work better for you.
You don't need exotic birds to give you pleasure. Look no farther than your back yard for colorful song birds.
