My senegal parrot started plucking his feathers.?
I have a 6 year old male Senegal Parrot. I've had him for around a year as he had been a rescue. He had been a feather plucker, but he had stopped a few months after I adopted him.
However, 3 days ago, he started plucking again . . . and it's pretty bad. He doesn't have any bald patches, but there is a lot of down showing.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Since I've had him, he's been on a pellet based diet, he has a gigantic cage, toys and I give him lots of attention. The only thing that changed was that I had purchased a pet rat. However, once he started plucking, I moved the rat to another location so he can't see the rat anymore. I feel so guilty for this. I would love him just the same if he didn't have a single feather on his body - but I hate seeing him hurt himself.
He doesn't only have pellets. I understand that anyone would get sick of that. lol He also gets fruits, veggies, brown rice, some peanuts and the occasional bit of table food.
Get the bird off a pellet based diet. It's a bland and boring diet for a bird. It's okay to add pellets to the seed diet, but not a full pellet based diet. Birds dont eat pellets in the wild.
