We have observed that my quaker parrot is picking at the feathers around its feet, and we were informed today that she is beginning to pluck her feathers. I know that it is from stress, and I really want to help her before she engrosses herself even more in this behavior. As of now it shes not missing a lot of feathers, but I know it will incline if we do not do anything. Has anyone had this problem before, and corrected it. I have given her tons of new toys and they keep her occupied and I have been staying in the room, and talking to her quietly to distract her from plucking. It has been working, but I can not stay with her 24/7 but she does get a really good amount of attention from about 4 other family members. Please tell me about your experiences I have read just about everything on the web. Any information about how to stop this behavior would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance. Some of the advice you have been given is very irresponsible and some is quite dangerous. To suggest taking the bird to a store is very bad advice. There is more disease and illness among birds in stores than most people realize. The only place you bird should go is to a vet. There are only two main reasons birds pluck. One is behavior/boredom problems. One is a health issue. You must rule out any possible health cause before attempting to correct it from the behavioral standpoint. If you bird has a health problem, all the work in the world will only frustrate you and stress the bird worse that is already is, leading to more plucking. If the plucking progresses to the point that the feather follicles are damaged, the feathers will never regrow. You don't want it to go that far. Also, do not be spraying any of that pet store junk on your bird. Remember, anything on his feathers ends up in his system. You don't want to risk poisoning him or making him sick. Please, get the bird a check up. As for the bordom issue, most people do not realize that Quakers are weaver birds. They love to make very elaborate weavings in their cages. Go to a dollar store and buy a big bag of plastic drinking straws. If he has never seen any, he may be a bit spooked at first so just put 2 or 3 in the cage. If he is not frightened, or later after he realizes they are harmless, you can add more. Then watch the fun. He will likely start weaving them in and out of his cage bars and anywhere else he can use. They can amuse themselves for hours, just weaving. I hope this helps.
