Why does my little Niko sit on his toy ball like it is an egg?
Niko, my sulpher crested cockatoo, is about two yrs old. I adopted him 8 months ago from a pet store that had rescued him from a hoarder. He is a chewer! He loves anything he can destroy from cardboard to plastic to wood. I can't keep a perch in there for any length of time because he'll just chew it up. I recently gave him a new toy which includes wooden balls and blocks it was gone in less than one day except one red wooden ball about the size of a golf ball that he has placed in his food bowl and sitting on it like an egg and he still eats! The vet gave him a complete check up when I first got him and he his healthy. I also had his dna checked and he is a male. His behavior doesn't really have me worried it just a little quirky. I own other parrots including other cockatoos all vary in ages. I just wanted to know if anyone can shed a little light on the subject.
Some birds do that. I once had two male cockatiels (they were gay. don't ask) and I'd give them large, oval, white beads which were roughly the size of eggs. They sat on those for weeks at a time.
I also have a male dove who sits in his seed-dish as if on eggs. I thought it was weird at first, until I discvered that he was actually siting on a rasin and a piece of dried fruit, I think. They sometimes have large pieces of fruit in the seed that my dove is too small to eat. So, he uses them as eggs. Your bird is fine, just entertaining himslef.
