Training you Parrot is not only an obligation for parrot owners it is something that come back to you as a reward for all of the wonderful times you and your bird will share time together. These birds are wonderful pets that are extremely smart. Their intelligence and their ability to learn make them a great deal of fun to train. That's the good news. But...remember, any animal with high intelligence can get bored pretty easily. The challenge to you is to take the time necessary to properly train your pet parrot which will assure years of enjoyment with a wonderful pet. Be patient, consistent, and loving, and your parrot will provide you with many years of loving joy and friendship.
Training your parrot isn't really any different than teaching your child or training any other pet. You just need to follow a few simple guidelines and be very consistent in your behaviors. Whenever you are having a training session it is usually better if you take your parrot from his or her cage and move to a small quiet space. Your parrot is more likely to remain attentive and retain information when it is in a new environment and when most distractions have been eliminated. If your parrot becomes distracted during training, it will not learn well. It's usually better if you turn off your cell phone, the TV, the radio that may be playing music or even worse, talk radio. If you keep in mind that parrots have an intelligence that is about equal to a 2 year old child you will be quite successful in your training. That means that slow and deliberate sessions that have lots of rewards. And don't forget, have your training sessions end before the bird gets tired and cranky.
Another obvious issue, but one that is worthy of mention is that you should plan your parrot's training time around their schedule, not yours. After your bird has finished eating is usually a good time for training. Your parrot will be full and content and will pay attention better to your training efforts. Your parrot will also appreciate plenty of praise. Even if you feel that you were not getting the results you had hoped for, do not let your parrot see your frustration. They are amazingly sensitive and if you project "bad vibes" it will make your bird nervous and unhappy which will translate into your having a harder time getting your parrot interested in learning in the future.
Your training sessions will be much more rewarding if you do not have a "carrot & stick" mindset. Carrot only, is the name of this game. All reward, no punishment. Do not punish your parrot, even if he or she is acting bad. Ignoring this behavior is your best bet when training your pet parrot. Parrots do not understand punishment or negative reinforcement. In fact, if you respond to your parrot's bad behavior, your pet may actually see this as positive attention. Another interesting thing to keep in mind that while your parrot will love food treats as rewards, you are going to want mix up your positive reinforcement with lots of words and actions that are praising and loving. Otherwise, your parrot may only perform the tricks you want them to when some kind of food reward is offered.
The old adage of "practice makes perfect" is really not valid. Only perfect practice makes perfect. While repetition is the key to successfully training your pet parrot make certain that you keep repeating what it is you want your bird to do until your pet "gets" the trick and can do it many times over. This concept and practice works well not only with basic commands but with more advanced tricks as well. If you have just recently taken your pet parrot home, it's usually best to start out with very simple tricks, such as teaching your parrot to sit on your finger on command. Find a simple word or phrase for each trick and use it every time you train. If you find your parrot is tired or uninterested, then stop and try again another time. It's really unproductive to try to force the training. Be assured that it will come in time if you are patient and understanding.
As your parrot learns more commands and tricks, you can begin moving your training session closer and closer to his cage. As they get accustomed to training and comfortable with their new skills they will begin to feel more comfortable and get less distracted while learning in and around their cage and in the hustle and bustle of your household. A word of caution. Birds learn quickly in most cases, and sometimes just by listening to the conversation in the house when they are not in training. This may cause embarrassment to you if they learn something inappropriate.
Training a parrot takes a lot of time and patience. You must love your bird and have a lot of time and dedication to make this partnership worthwhile. With patient training and love, you end up with a friendship that will be with you for a very long time to come.
